The celebration began with a tour of the school. For the honorees who attended CHS when it was located on 119 Pond Street, the tour is serves as an introduction to Classical as it now stands on 770 Westminster Street. For others, the tour is a trip down memory lane, an opportunity to see how things have changed and, perhaps, how they haven’t. A luncheon was held after the tour, followed by a student assembly. At the assembly, the honorees addressed the students to share their experiences and memories of Classical. This year, the honorees were presented with portraits created by art students.
The evening program was held at the Providence Marriott and began with a cocktail reception. Guests were entertained by the Classical High School Jazz Ensemble while they mingled and met the honorees. Classical High School student art was displayed throughout the room.
After the cocktail reception, the honorees and guests headed over to the ball room for dinner and the ceremony. They were greeted by the Classical String Ensemble. Dr. Curtis Odom ’90, President of the CHSAA Board of Directors opened the event with a speech. He was followed by Mayor Jorge Elorza, Elaine Berlinsky Fain, M.D. ’66, Principal Scott Barr, and 2017 Class Valedictorian Caitlin McNally. The honorees were then introduced, one by one, by current Classical High School students. At the podium, honorees regaled the audience with memories from their time at Classical High School and expressed their gratitude towards school teachers and staff.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards are a testament to the strength of a Classical High School education and the support students receive while at the school. The Awards ceremony is also a testament to the connectivity alumni have to their classes and the school, and their immense support for the current students and staff at Classical High School.
Congratulations to Maurice, Charlie, Robert, Jonathan, and Anaridis – you are proof that Classical High School strengthens its students and its students continue to Keep Classical Strong!
