Rémy Poisson ’17 – One Year Later

Rémy Poisson '17

My first year in the Brown-RISD Dual Degree program was exhausting, rigorous, and, at times, daunting. In other words, I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my college experience. At Brown I will concentrate in Political Science while at RISD I intend to major in Illustration. After making it through the required first-year studio classes in RISD’s Experimental and Foundation Studies I am looking forward to taking more courses in my areas of interest and to see how they will influence and build upon one another.

Experiences in and out of the classroom at Classical High School guided me through my first year at Brown-RISD. Being able to take AP classes taught me valuable skills such as time management and the process required to produce high-quality academic work. Teachers at Classical have high expectations of their students and these expectations are assumed in college as well. The school days at Classical are long and you have to balance your remaining time with extracurriculars and homework. Fortunately, I was able to be a part of Classical athletic teams and clubs of my choice. I have continued swimming in college and have produced illustrations for Brown student publications, collaborative efforts that remind me of time spent in the CHS Art Club.

Some of my favorite classes so far have been Foundation Drawing in the fall semester and a political science class in the spring semester. The work I created in drawing utilized charcoal, a medium I was exposed to at Classical. In my political science class I drew upon the content we covered in classes such as AP European History and AP American History, which helped me understand the path dependence of current events discussed in the course.

I’ve always wanted to create politically informed artwork and, with my combined majors, I can deliver on that intention. In my first year I already started illustrating for multiple publications on Brown’s campus. When I return to school in the fall I will continue producing artwork in my courses and for publications that engage with contemporary politics and culture.
