December 2017 Newsletter
On behalf of the Alumni Association, thank you for your generous support of our work in 2017. With your engagement we are accomplishing great things at Classical–with so much more to come. Our Development Committee is pursuing a three-prong strategy to keep Classical strong both now and in the years to come.
First, we are relaunching our Annual Fund. You may have already received the appeal in your mailbox. We will now call our yearly campaign the Keeping Classical Strong Annual Fund. We need your financial support of this unrestricted cash reserve to run our organization. In addition, your annual contributions allow the Alumni Association to respond to immediate or unexpected needs of Classical that would likely go unmet without us.
Next, we are building an Endowment to ensure long term financial support of Classical. In 2017 the Alumni Association secured a generous gift from the estate of Charles Peck ’41. Of the $586,000 provided, the Alumni Association will be investing $500,000 into the Endowment. It is vital that we build this Endowment together so that the annual draw grows enough to bridge the persistent shortfalls between the school budget and Classical’s actual needs. We are working with a few alumni who are interested in contributing, and welcome others to help lead the charge. We will keep you posted.
Finally, we are implementing Targeted Philanthropy whereby we either utilize an event to provide proceeds to a particular need, or we ask you directly to help us fund an unexpected shortfall. Examples include our Annual Purple & White Beach Party which supports the Advanced Placement (AP) certification courses for teachers, the Band Uniform Fund so the marching band can represent the school with pride, and the Art Fund to provide equipment and materials for the CHS art department. In this way, you know exactly where your donation is going and are able to support causes that mean the most to you.
The impact of our Targeted Philanthropy has been overwhelmingly successful. Understanding the needs of the school has moved you to donate, and we are very grateful. So far, we have raised more than $4,000 towards our goal of $6,000 for the Band Uniform Fund. We have also raised more than $2,000 towards our goal of $5,000 for the Art Fund which we initiated with Giving Tuesday.
There are so many ways to give besides donating much needed money. The events that we hold are crucial for both connecting our diverse, vibrant community and for addressing funding gaps. We want to encourage you to find an event to attend. Our 2018 Calendar is chock full of opportunities for you to join in on the fun, connect with fellow Classicalites, and support our efforts to Keep Classical Strong.
